Fruitfulness and Multiplying

Updated: Nov 28, 2019

In the Marriage and Purpose Series, we are focusing on how what God placed on the earth to maintain order, marriage, and how it is currently out of order and position, allowing disorder and chaos to reign in the earth today.

As a refresher, our scripture reference is Genesis 1:26-28, with the key being verse 28, ““26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27So God created man in Hisown image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

We also covered the following definitions in the previous post:

  1. Fruitful: The word used in Genesis 1:28 does not mean only to produce fruit, but to thrive in fruitfulness or succeed in producing fruit.  Since fruit is food, then think about fruit in this context…fruit (food) is a substance required by the body to sustain life.

  2. Multiply: We all understand the word multiply means to increase in number.  But the word here also means to become great, powerful, to grow up.

In this post, we are going to focus on what is means to be fruitful and multiply as God intends.

Based on the definitions above, my marriage is expected to thrive in being fruitful while providing substance for my family, other marriages and the earth.  By offering useful substance to other marriages, I am multiplying or increasing fruitful marriages in the earth.  These marriages will then be able to thrive and provide substance to other marriages.

In service this past Sunday my pastor made a point to both singles and married couples alike when he said that both must be intentional about spending time around fruitful, productive marriages.

The singles should spend time around these marriages to learn what fruitful marriages look and married couples should spend time around these marriages to be fed, sustained and refreshed.

God believes in the principal of fruitful, multiplying marriages.  In Genesis 9:1 we find the same instruction given to Noah and his sons, “And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.”

Please take note that both in Genesis 1 and Genesis 9 that before God instructing fruitfulness and multiplication, God blessed.  These words tell me that your marriage has been blessed to produce fruit and increase other marriages in the earth.

Now here is the focus of this post.  Jesus said something crucial in John 15:16, “You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”

Let me restate this scripture for you, “You have not chosen me, but I have chosen your marriage and ordained (blessed/set aside) your marriage, that your marriage should go and bring forth fruit and that your marital fruit should remain: that whatsoever you ask for your marriage of the Father in my name, he may give it to your marriage.”

Here is the point, not only should your marriage produce fruit, but it must produce the right kind of fruit, and that fruit is what must remain.

Adam and Eve’s marriage produced fruit, but it was the wrong kind of fruit, and that fruit has remained.  That fruit is showing up in the earth, especially in marriages and the chaos of the earth is proof.

It will take Apostles, Prophets, Evangelist, Teachers and Preachers (Pastors) to help increase the fruit in the earth, but it is not what you think.

It will take Apostolic marriages, marriages willing to go into unclaimed territory where marriage and its principles need to be established as the norm to produce marital fruit.

It will take Prophetic marriages, marriages who declare marriage as God intended in the earth, who declare the roles and purposes that God uniquely created in man and woman to bring forth his complete image for the earth to see.

It will take Evangelistic marriages, marriages willing to live and spread the good news of God focused marriages and compel others to pursue this important, Godly institution.

It will take Teaching marriages, those marriages willing to share, be open and transparent so that marriages can learn to be authentic, honest and committed to truth.

It will take Preaching marriages, those marriages willing to shepherd other marriages into fruitfulness.

Your marriage was called to have everlasting fruit to be remembered for generations to come.  In this, your marriage will multiply in the earth what God intended…His image.

I leave you with Leviticus 26:9 restated for marriage, “For I will have respect unto your marriage, and make your marriage fruitful, and multiply your marriage, and establish my covenant with you and your marriage.”  This verse is God’s promise to the fruitful marriage.
