Marriage & Purpose Introduction

Updated: Nov 28, 2019

The other morning as I was waking up God began talking to me regarding his favorite topic…marriage.  As he spoke to me he pointed out that the earth is in disarray because what he placed here to keep the earth in order is out of order and out of position.

This is not simply about the position of the man or of the woman, but the position of the union of man and woman in the partnership of marriage.

Each part of the marriage union carries a unique component and characteristic of God and his nature to fulfill the image of God in the earth.  You have probably heard me say that in order to see the full image of God, you have to see man and woman unified.

As I tried to keep resting, God continued to pour into me about this topic and his concern about the current order and position of marriages in the earth.  He would not let me rest until He completed the pouring.

I don’t know if you have taken notice, but there are more ministries arising in the earth to deal with marriage and it’s brokenness.

God was very specific in what he wants me to address and over the next few days or so I will share several posts regarding the topic of ‘Marriage and Purpose’ in the following contexts:

  1. Fruitfulness and Multiplication

  2. Subduing, Dominion and Filling

Our focus will be on Genesis 1:26-28, “26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

I will start by defining a few words that will be key to the topics to be discussed:

  1. Fruitful: The word used in Genesis 1:28 does not mean only to produce fruit, but to thrive in fruitfulness or thrive in producing fruit.  Since fruit is a food, then think about fruit in this context…fruit (food) is a substance required by the body to sustain life.

  2. Multiply: We all understand the word multiply means to increase in number.  But the word here also means to become great, powerful, to grow up.

  3. Fill: The word here means to fill up space or mass…to collect.

  4. Subdue: The word used here means to overcome, enslave, conquer and control an environment or people.

  5. Dominion: The word used here means to rule over, dominate, direct, lead, control…manage or govern an entity, people with considerable or forceful authority.

Now when you think of purpose, let’s use the classic definition:

  1. As a noun purpose means ‘the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists; a person’s sense of resolve or determination.

  2. As a verb purpose means ‘to have as one’s intention or objective’.

So what we will try to answer for you or cause you to think about as you read these posts is this, ‘What is the purpose of my marriage beyond the superficial?’

Every marriage has a responsibility to the earth and a purpose for which God brought your marriage into existence.  Your marriage is not by happenstance and the sooner you understand its purpose, the sooner you will find a productive and fruitful marriage.
