Subdue and Dominion

Updated: Nov 28, 2019

In the Marriage and Purpose Series, we are focusing on how God placed marriage on the earth to maintain order and how it is currently out of order and position, allowing disorder and chaos to reign in the earth today.

As a refresher, our scripture reference is Genesis 1:26-28, with the key being verse 28, ““26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27So God created man in His image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

We also covered the following definitions in the previous post:

  1. Subdue: The word used here means to overcome, enslave, conquer and control an environment or people.

  2. Dominion: The word used here means to rule over, dominate, direct, lead, control, manage or govern an entity, people with considerable or forceful authority.

In this post, we are going to focus on subduing and dominion and what it means to Marriage and Purpose.

In the definition for subdue the word enslave and control are included.  So did God place the institution of marriage in the earth to “enslave and control” creation?  If we stop there, our understanding will be unbalanced, and that will be out conclusion.  When I think of slavery, there is not a mutual agreeance or understanding for those involved.  In slavery, the perceived more dominant thing or person, forces the less dominant thing or person into submission and compliance, often with cruelty.

Now if I let my mind run, I can see Adam walking up to the tiger and imposing his will upon the tiger and the tiger fighting Adam back.  The natural conclusion is that Adam will lose the battle and possibly die as an outcome.  That would be the end of the story, right?

However, there must be more.  Jesus tells us in Luke: 22:25-26 that he does not want us to exercise our authority in the way that the world does.  He says, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over the, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors.  But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let me be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.”  1 Peter 5:2-3 gives us further instruction, “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being examples to the flock.”

As God placed marriage in the earth, I believe he had these principles in mind regarding the proper exercising of the authority that he was delegating to man, which is why I think the word dominion is added to balance the word subdue.

Romans 6:6 & 6:19 says the following, “6knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.  19I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.”

The things that we subdue must be done so in the standard of “righteousness for holiness,” which is where dominion comes into play.

While dominate is a part of the definition for dominion, the words that jump out most to me and are in line with the scriptures that have been mentioned so far are direct, lead, manage or govern.

Our marriages were placed on the earth to guide the creation and to do it by setting an example.  The standard to be set was our obedience to God.  Obedience in the earth has a trickle-down effect.  As man obeys God, then creation obeys man.

If there is disorder in creation, then man, while in obedience to God, has the authority to call it back in order because the creation will hear the Spirit of God behind the voice and influence of man.  This influence and hidden voice are one reason God placed his breath in us, so that as we speak, His spiritual authority is given voice through our words, but only when we are in line with him.

So let me rewind the Adam vs. The Tiger.  Now when Adam approaches the tiger to subdue him and the tiger postures to challenge him, Adam then speaks to the tiger to remind him of his authority.  What the tiger hears is Adams, voice, but also God’s spiritual authority behind the voice and complies.  How else could Noah call the animals in and keep order?  They were obeying and honoring the spiritual authority in Noah’s voice, the voice of God.

Your marriage, when in order represents the full image and authority of God and when it is in order and obedience there is nothing under your authority that can resist your authority.  The reason why is all of the creation is still in tune to the voice of God’s spiritual authority, even those who are of the world.  However, the first step is your obedience.  Remember the word tells us that, “all creation is waiting for the sons and daughters of God to be revealed.”

What are they waiting for?  They are waiting for the sons and daughters of God to fall into obedience so that they can hear clearly and consistently again the authority behind the voice.

Will your marriage come into obedience to increase the presence of God’s authority on the earth?  Will you exercise that authority as God expects?

We can if we are willing to do as 1 Corinthians 9:27, “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I should be a castaway.”  We must commit to bringing our marriages into subjection to God and his instruction.
